31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala D’Nard Arthur, Jennifer Arthur, Roger Staubach, Marianne Staubach, Chris Duddy, Joely Fisher, Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Justin Whitman, Capa Aikman, Troy Aikman

Dallas Cowboys quarterback greats Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, and Tony Romo and other celebrities light up the runway with 25 children, raising funds to cure pediatric cancer

Over 1,000 guests, including 80 pediatric cancer patients (25 featured models and CCF fashion show alumni), survivors and their families, celebrities, sponsors, and supporters, filled the Hilton Anatole, on Friday, April 26, for the most successful Children’s Cancer Fund Gala on record. The 31st annual fundraising gala, “An Evening in the Garden,” raised more than $1.4 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children’s Health and UT Southwestern – surpassing fundraising goals for the third year in a row. Since 1982 Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $10 million to the childhood cancer cause.

The gala, which transported guests into an enchanted garden created by Gro Events and Design, began with remarks from longtime Children’s Cancer Fund Gala Honorary Co-Chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman as well as Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman.

“This is the second year in a row that Children’s Cancer Fund has not had to say goodbye to any child who has participated in this event in a memorial video,” said Roger Staubach.  “This is a true testimony to the advancements of treatments that CCF is funding. Pediatric cancer research is making a difference.”

“We are always hopeful that this will be the last year – that we will no longer need to raise funds to cure pediatric cancer,” said Honorary Co-Chair Troy Aikman.  “We wouldn’t be here without your support.” Aikman continued, “Roger is a hero to everyone – he was to me and to so many in this room, but the heroes tonight are these kids.  If you’re a parent and this doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, then you’re not alive.”

As Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman took the podium, she thanked Aikman and Staubach for the many years they have given to Children’s Cancer Fund as honorary co-chairs. “Roger has been involved 31 years and Troy for 22, which speaks volumes not only about the worthiness of the work that Children’s Cancer Fund does, but to the character of these gentlemen who have had a huge impact on the organization and the children they connect with.”

Additionally, she highlighted the work of Children’s Dr. Patrick Leavey for this year’s Call for the Cure, Applying Artificial Intelligence to Find a Cure. “Utilizing artificial intelligence, Dr. Leavey can see what tumors are doing and how he can cure them – cutting-edge research happening right here in Dallas,” added Whitman.  This year’s Call for the Cure raised a record-breaking $339,350.

Following the opening remarks, children ages 5 to 17, matched with celebrity escorts, lit up the runway in their fashions provided by Dillard’s for a star-studded fashion show, coordinated by RSC Show Productions.

In addition to Staubach, Aikman and Romo, the 31st Annual Fashion Show presented an all-star lineup of celebrity escorts including Josh Abbott, lead singer Josh Abbott Band; Avery Jai, founder and artistic director of Don’t Ask Why; Melissa Brown, actress and stunt artist; Gary Brown, producer, Marvel’s Agents of Shield; Erin Cummings, actress from LA; Monta Ellis, professional basketball player; Michael Finley, retired professional basketball player, current film producer, and Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Dallas Mavericks; Joely Fisher, actress and singer from LA; Miss Texas America Madison Fuller; Jimmy Maurer, FC Dallas Soccer player; Scott Murray, broadcast journalist, KLIF radio, Chairman/CEO of Murray Media; Roshi Muns, founder of Society Bakery; Geena Ngaaje, Dallas Hip Hop Dance Fest; K’hanh Nguyen, Dallas-based fashion designer; Marty Turco, former NHL goaltender and president of Dallas Stars Foundation; Pink Heals Firefighters; Dallas Fire Station #19; Batman, Queen Elsa; Spiderman, Wonder Woman.

Backstage was a flurry of activity of kids, clowns, magicians, and fun and autographs with celebrities along with primping for the show with makeup, nails, and hairstyles by longtime Children’s Cancer Fund supporter Salon Pompeo.

During the evening, Scott Murray interviewed kids and escorts backstage, which was projected on video screens in the ballroom.  In an interview with Candice and Tony Romo, Tony commented, “We are here for these kids. When you see these kids going through this, and especially if you’re a father, you just want to hug them and do what you can to make a difference.  I can’t imagine having one of my kids going through this.”  Candice added, “This is such a special night for these kids – a night out, away from the hospital. Everyone has a story – someone in their lives who’s been affected by cancer. If we want to help and make a difference, we can give – big or small.”

Dak Prescott, who was unable to attend this year provided a video tribute. “I’m sorry I cannot make it tonight. The Children’s Cancer Fund Gala is always such a special night – one of my favorite nights of the year. I wanted to make sure I told all the beautiful kids tonight how much you inspire me and every one of us. Keep fighting the good fight, and I know you have faith to finish your fight against cancer.  To all of you in the room, thank you for your support so we can end this terrible disease together. Have a great night, and I’ll see you next year!”

Vanessa Lachey also sent a video tribute. “I am so bummed that my husband Nick and I won’t be able to join you tonight at the gala. I had a sneak peek of some of the kids tonight, and they are shining from inside out – it’s such a beautiful thing to see.  I want to thank you from the bottom of my husband’s and my hearts for being so kind and generous and reaching deep into your hearts for Children’s Cancer Fund. Have a great time.”

Upon arrival, guests will be transported into a lush garden setting, complete with a floral swing and a gift card tree – all designed and created by GRO Events and Design. The evening will conclude with dancing and entertainment, provided by DJ Souljah and a violin accompanist.

On Easter Sunday of 2017, Hannah Jones was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. Upon her diagnosis she was flown to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where she and her mom lived for the next 28 days. On the 28th day she was declared in remission.  She continues to see her doctors on a monthly basis.

“Hannah has stayed healthy and strong through treatment and for that, we thank God,” said her mom Robin Jones. “She is such a sweet-spirited young lady who is as sweet on the inside as she is pretty on the outside. She has used her bravery and her positivity to beat her cancer.”

Jones is homeschooled and has six siblings. She is the happiest when she is with her family and friends. She loves to cook with her mom and hopes to one day be a professional baker.  She also loves to hunt with her dad, draw with her brother, and do craft projects with her sisters. In the summer she enjoys swimming, and in the winter, she likes to go camping. She hopes to go back to Florida again one day because she had so much fun there with her family last year.

“I am excited about being a fashion model in the show because I love to be on the runway,” said Jones.

In September of 2016, Caitlyn Warren was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which too many B-cell lymphoblasts are found. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. Warren is currently in treatment with visits to her doctor once a month.

“Throughout it all, Caitlyn always radiated so much joy and rarely complained of her own sickness,” said Christina Warren, her mother. “Instead, she would always worry about everyone around her.”

Warren is in the second grade, has two siblings, and loves to sing, cook, and play. She is happiest when she’s with her family. God is her hero because she knows He loves her and will answer her prayers.  One day she would love to travel to Hawaii because Moana is from there, and she would like to swim with the dolphins and collect lots of seashells.

Her cancer journey began only a few weeks into kindergarten, when she woke up complaining of leg pain. Her knee became swollen, and scans revealed a lesion on right femur caused it to fracture. The fracture was surrounded by a large amount of fluid, and the family was sent to an orthopedic surgeon and oncologist the following day at Children’s. Initially doctors believed she had sarcoma, but after the biopsy it was determined she had B-cell ALL.

“I received the call while I was waiting in the carpool line at school and was devastated as I learned the next steps,” said Christina Warren, Caitlyn’s mother. “PET scan and bone marrow biopsy scheduled for Monday, surgery to insert the port on Tuesday, and chemo would begin Wednesday. The world we knew was forever changed. However, the doctors were relieved that it was not sarcoma. They said this was their specialty with a 95 percent cure rate, less invasive therapy, and no surgery.”

While in the hospital for the port placement, the nurse practitioner informed the family that had the original diagnosis from the orthopedic surgeon been confirmed, Warren would have been looking at 40+ surgeries in her lifetime. A month later the family found out the orthopedic surgeon told the pediatrician, just days before we received the diagnosis, that he anticipated Warren would lose her leg.

“Now we understood why our oncologist had such a huge sigh of relief,” added Christina Warren. “Hearing all of this helped us remember how truly blessed we were during the most di?cult months to come.”

Warren became homebound, and her kindergarten teacher requested to be her teacher, visiting 2-3 times a week to help her from falling behind. Due to the fracture, Warren was unable to walk and was confined to a wheelchair for two months.  During the first month on steroids, she gained a substantial amount of weight and began losing hair in the frontand top of her head, leaving small patches of long 'dead-looking' hair along the back.

“At Christmas 2016, my husband let Caitlyn shave his head, which gave her the confidence to finally shave her own,” added Christina Warren.  “She became an incredible light in the midst of such darkness. Our faith and trust in God were the only things that helped us through it all as we were hit emotionally, physically, as well as financially, when my husband decided to close his new business so he could be in Dallas by her side. We are grateful for all the support we received from our friends, family and church.”

“I’m excited about being a fashion model in the show because I will get to dress up, look pretty, and have fun,” said Warren. “I’m looking forward to walking down that runway and raising lots of money to cure cancer!”

In January of 2018, Antoine Wilkerson was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor that starts in the region of the brain at the base of the skull. He is not currently in treatment but visits his doctor every three months. It all began in November of 2016 when he began complaining of headaches.  An MRI revealed a large tumor of the brain, and two days later he had surgery which resulted in the removal of the entire tumor and a good prognosis. He received one year of IV chemotherapy, radiation, and oral chemotherapy.

“In June the doctors detected what appeared to be regrowth of the tumor,” added Kierria Wilkerson, his mom. “We prayed and Antoine’s second surgery revealed it was only scar tissue!  Meanwhile an ear specialist discovered the IV chemo had cause him to lose his high-pitched hearing and he received hearing aids. We still counted this a blessing because it could have been much worse!”

Monday through Friday for 12 weeks, Wilkerson had to be put to sleep with sedation for radiation treatments because he was so young. For the remaining six months he stayed home and took oral chemotherapy.

“Can you imagine a 4-year-old swallowing pills?” said his mother. “He said God helped him, and I believe him! After his brain surgeries, he was in so much pain and asked his Dad and me to pray with him – our 4-year-old son was asking to pray. He will tell you he is God’s child. Throughout it all, he smiled and never let it get him down. His wonderful nurse told him she was also a cancer survivor, and she told him about the Children’s Cancer Fund Fashion Show. She had participated when she was 16. There have been so many blessings and so much love from this unfortunate situation.”

Wilkerson has four older siblings, attends Pittsburg Primary School, and wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He loves playing in sprinklers, playing video games, and wrestling. He considers Batman to be his hero because he keeps him from getting hurt. He loves being with his mom and dad and would love to go to Disney World to see everything that is there.

“I am excited about being a fashion model in the show because I think it will be fun and I can meet famous people,” said Wilkerson.

In July of 2014, Sawyer Rucker was diagnosed with infantile acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. While ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers, leukemia in infants is extremely rare.  While Rucker is no longer in treatment, he is monitored closely for any potential relapse.

“I’m Sawyer the Warrior!” said Rucker. “I have no more cancer because Jesus healed me!”

Rucker is one of eight siblings with a personality larger than life.  When he grows up, he would like to be a firefighter. For now, he enjoys being with his mom and dad and swimming, and he loves surprises.

“Sawyer was diagnosed as a baby, so hospital life and chemo is all he’s ever known,” said Heather Rucker, his mother. “He has CRUSHED all the negative expectations of the doctors and has overcome dozens of spinal taps, blood transfusions, surgeries, shots, and long-term hospitalizations.”

"I’m excited to be a fashion model in the show because I think it would be cool,” said Rucker.

The gala, which is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, is sponsored by CBS 11 and features Karen Borta as mistress of ceremonies. Since 1982 Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $10 million to the childhood cancer cause.

“The Children’s Cancer Fund Gala brings together kids who have been through such hard times, from chemo to radiation,” said Jennifer Arthur, executive director, Children’s Cancer Fund.  “No matter where they are in treatment – day one or year 12 – we are celebrating their lives and letting them know they are not alone in this fight. The commitments of our supporters on this special night give us hope of a day when childhood cancer will no longer exist.”

Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman has served as a lifestyle contributor to the TODAY Show on NBC and editor-at-large of Southern Living Magazine since 2011. She is the author of eight books on entertaining, including her latest, Parties Around a Punch Bowl. Whitman is also a mother of two children and an active member of the Dallas community.  Presently, she is the chair of the NorthPark Ambassador Program, where she is working to raise awareness for Dwell with Dignity. Along with her husband, Justin, she co-chaired the North Texas Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids program for two years and served on the board. She is a member of The Sweetheart Ball, the New Friends New Life Advisory Board, and the MTV RE:DEFINE Advisory Committee, of which she is a past chair. This spring Whitman is honorary chair of the DWD Thrift Studio Event. Additionally, she is a 2018 and 2019 Crystal Charity Ball Ten Best Dressed Honoree, a recipient of the American Heart Association Volunteer of the Year Award and a co-recipient of the Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, sharing the honor with her mother, Myrna Schlegel.

“After meeting these children at the hospital, I was amazed to see not only their strength and resilience, but also such joy on each of their faces – in the midst of their incredibly hard battles,” said Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Gala chair. “No child or family deserves what comes with a cancer diagnosis. Children’s Cancer Fund is making an impact, and I’m thrilled to help through the Gala. I consider each of these special children my new friends in life, and I’m looking forward to supporting them in their fight.”

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded 36 years ago by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. CCF is one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward treatment and prevention of childhood cancers. Among the programs supported by Children’s Cancer Fund are the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at Children's Health and the Children's Cancer Fund Comprehensive Center for Research in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which is gaining a national reputation for its work in eradicating childhood cancer. In 2002, Children’s Cancer Fund initiated funding for a full-time Child Life Specialist at the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children’s Medical Center to assist the outpatient team. The primary goal of the Child Life Specialist is to make each of the 80-90 daily outpatients’ visits a more positive experience. This position is funded annually by CCF, helping to ease the emotional strain of ongoing treatments, some lasting several years.

“The children have looked forward to this night all year,” added Arthur. “They spend the day getting runway ready and reuniting with their friends backstage, and when the spotlight comes on, you will see some of the happiest smiles. The grand finale, which features CCF models from the past 30 years, is one of the most incredible moments of the evening. These stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.”

Anthony Cano, 7, Irving Cano is a featured model in the 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala, April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Anthony Cano, 7, of Irving, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.  The event begins with a silent auction and VIP reception at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman joins longtime Honorary Co-Chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman to kick off the evening.  The event is expected to raise more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Health and UT Southwestern.  Staubach, who has been involved all 31 years, and Aikman, now in his 22nd year, join other celebrities and sponsors as runway escorts for 25 featured pediatric cancer patients, ages 4-16, who model fashions by Dillard’s for the annual fashion show, produced by RSC Show Productions. Upon arrival, guests will be transported into a lush garden setting, complete with a floral swing and a gift card tree – all designed and created by GRO Events and Design. The evening will conclude with dancing and entertainment, provided by DJ Souljah and a violin accompanist.

In April of 2017, Cano was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. He is currently in treatment and visits his doctor once a month.

Cano attends Farine Elementary and has one younger sister. “Champs never give up!” has been his survivor motto throughout his fight. He is happiest when he’s playing with his cousins and friends.  When he grows up, he would like to be in the Army or be a doctor. If he could go anywhere in the world, he would love to take a Disney cruise and see the shows.

“I am excited to meet famous people and have fun at the gala,” said Cano.

ADRIAN MARTINEZ, 15, OF GRAND PRAIRIE, IS A FEATURED MODEL IN THE CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND ANNUAL GALA, “AN EVENING IN THE GARDEN,” EXPECTED TO RAISE MORE THAN $1 MILLION

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Adrian Martinez, 15, of Grand Prairie, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas. In December of 2014, Martinez was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.  He is now in remission and continues to see his doctor on a bi-monthly basis.

“Having Down syndrome, Adrian’s treatment was different as he did a clinical trial treatment,” said Christina Martinez, his mom. “Everything was a little bit scarier because we didn’t know the outcome of each decision as it was all still new. We kept our faith and our hope and took it day by day. So many tears of joy were shed when we found out he was done with treatments!”

Martinez is in the tenth grade at Green Oaks School.  Jesus is his hero because he knows that He saved him. He enjoys eating his favorite foods and watching movies, especially Woody and Buzz in Toy Story, and he would like to be a cowboy when he grows up.  If he could go anywhere in the world, he would love to go to Disney World to see all his favorite characters.

“I am excited about being a fashion model in the show because I want to show people there’s hope,” said Martinez.  “I am also looking forward to meeting new people.”

Toni Darrough, 13 Darrough is a featured model in 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala on April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Toni Darrough, 13, of Waxahachie, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas. The evening will conclude with dancing and entertainment, provided by DJ Souljah and a violin accompanist.

In May of 2018, Darrough was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that produces immature bone. It is the most common type of cancer that arises in bones and is usually found at the end of long bones, often around the knee. She is currently in treatment.

“I had pains in my leg that made my family and me worry,” said Darrough. “The doctor told us to come to Children’s hospital for testing, and I soon learned I had bone cancer and would need chemo. This was all very frightening for me and was a real struggle. My first few treatments were hard, but I knew I had to deal with it.

Then surgery came, and things got harder, but now things are getting better. I just keep fighting every day until I get stronger and beat this.”

When Darrough grows up, she would like to be a singer, clothes designer, and a dancer. She enjoys basketball and cheerleading and loves to be around other people. Her mom is her hero because she remains strong no matter what. One day she thinks it would be fun to go to Universal Studios and make memories with her family.

“I’m excited to be in the fashion show because I like to dress up and meet new people,” said Darrough.

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Haylie Geraci, 12, of Trophy Club, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In May of 2018, Haylie Geraci was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), an aggressive blood cancer in which too many?T-cell?lymphoblasts (immature white blood cells) are found in the bone marrow. Geraci, a normally energetic 11-year-old, was tired and complaining she had a stomach ache. The family learned at the time of her diagnosis that she was critical and in dire need of platelets for her B negative blood type.

“They called me at the house with the results of her blood test and said she was critical, and we must get her to the ER immediately,” said Melissa Geraci, her mother. “From that point on, our lives were forever changed, and we soon learned of the important life-saving need for blood donations.  While in the hospital, her blood and platelets were so low that the doctors could not perform a spinal tap and her necessary chemotherapy. They were scrambling to find blood and platelets for her uncommon blood type and finally located a single unit at 2:30 a.m., but it wasn’t enough.”

This was the beginning of an awareness campaign within the community highlighting the need for people to donate blood. Geraci was then determined to turn her diagnosis into a teachable moment to raise awareness of this important need. The family learned that hospitals rely on organizations like Carter BloodCare to supply them with blood and platelets.  B negative is a less common blood type, and the platelets are good for only a few days. The Geraci family hopes that Haylie’s story will encourage more people to donate blood and platelets.

Haylie Geraci is in the 6th Grade at Medlin Middle School. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, playing games with her family and watching movies.  She loves to snuggle with her 14-year-old?dachshund, Peanut, and make movies of him. One day she would like to be a movie producer and an actress. She wants to travel to a nice beach one day and thinks Hawaii’s beaches would be beautiful.

“I am so excited to dress up and walk the runway at the Gala,” said Haylie Geraci.

“Grace has been a fighter since day one,” said Carrie Byrd, her mother. “She is a triplet born at 32 weeks and was the smallest of the three,” said Carrie Byrd, her mother. “With the help of our family and friends, we made it through 2 ½ years of treatment, which included many procedures, blood products and hospital stays. Through it all, Grace laughed and smiled.”

When Grace grows up, she would like to be a beautiful princess. She loves to play and color and be at home with her family.  She also enjoys camping and going to her grandpa’s house.

“I am excited about being in the fashion show,” said Grace Byrd. “I think it will be fun to walk on stage with my friends,” said Grace Byrd.

Adiela Tobar, 5 Tobar is a featured model in the 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala on April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Adiela Tobar, 5, of Red Oak, is a featured model in theChildren’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In July of 2017, Tobar was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a very rare cancerous tumor that starts in the liver. She is not currently in treatment but see her doctor every three months. Her mom first discovered a lump during her bath time, and the family soon learned that her cancer had metastasized to both lung lobes.

“We turned to our family for prayer and found our family being lifted up by our local community as well as prayers from all over the world,” said Dyann Tobar, her mother. “After that first nine days in the hospital we finally made it home and learned our family would be expecting another baby. We did a lot of praying. The chemo drugs made Adiela lethargic, and she battled infection, but things eventually began to look better.”

In a few months, the family received the news she would not need a transplant.  Surgery soon followed to remove most of Tobar’s liver and part of her diaphragm, and the margins were clear. More chemo followed with most of December in the hospital, but she was home in time for Christmas.

“By then, we all felt as a family that we had hit our stride,” added Dyann Tobar. “We knew which chemo drugs caused certain symptoms, how to prevent them, and we were all lifted up by so many prayers.”

Tobar reached the end of treatment on February 22, and four days later her baby brother Gabriel was born. Two weeks later scans confirmed her liver was all clear, and the lung tumors had mostly disappeared.  To besure, surgeries were sheduled  for removal of tumors from each lung. In April, after pathology revealed that tissue from the first surgery was necrotic, a second surgery was planned to remove the remaining lung tumors and port.

When she grows up, Tobar would like to be a doctor so she can take care of people like they have taken care of her. For now, her favorite things are being with her family, swimming, and playing outside. She hopes she can go on vacation one day with her family to Disney World.

“I am looking forward to seeing all the pretty fashion at the gala and playing dress up,” said Tobar.

The gala, which is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, is sponsored by CBS 11 and features Karen Borta as mistress of ceremonies. Since 1982 Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $10 million to the childhood cancer cause.

“While it’s a miracle for our family, we are still a childhood cancer family, and the scars that Adiela carries physically are also carried in our hearts,” added Dyann Tobar. “We carry the weight of the knowledge that Adiela will have an increased chance for medical problems as an adult, but because of this journey, we see every moment with our children as a gift.”

Upon arrival, guests will be transported into a lush garden setting, complete with a floral swing and a gift card tree – all designed and created by GRO Events and Design. The evening will conclude with dancing and entertainment, provided by DJ Souljah and a violin accompanist.

In January of 2017, Reese Lewis was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. Lewis is now cancer free, takes a daily chemo pill, and visits the clinic once a month for a higher dose of chemo.  Her treatment will end in May 2019.

“We took Reese to the ER after she had been running a high fever for about four or five days straight,” said Morgan Lewis, her mom. “The ER doctors informed us that she needed an immediate blood transfusion and must be taken immediately to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. She was diagnosed the next day, and we stayed in the hospital for a month receiving treatment. In April, we returned to the hospital due to an unknown virus. She did not hit remission in the first six weeks as expected, but we got the wonderful news that she had after four months, and our hospital stays have stopped!”

Reese Lewis is in kindergarten at Prince of Peace Christian School. She enjoys playing with her friends, going to the pool, listening to music, and riding her bike. When she grows up, she would like to be a veterinarian. She loves princess movies and hopes she can travel to Disney World someday to see all the characters.

“I’m excited to be in the fashion show at the Gala to wear fancy new clothes and meet lots of new people,” said Lewis.

In April of 2012, Aliza Sheikh, like Reese Lewis, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Sheikh finished her treatment July of 2014. She is now in remission and visits her doctor every six months.

“Our family’s life changed forever on April 18, 2012,” said Asma Patel, Sheikh’s mother. “Just the day before my daughter went to Montessori in the morning and played outside with the neighborhood kids that in the afternoon. We had an appointment with her pediatrician for a checkup because her appetite had decreased significantly, and she had started taking afternoon naps. When we got the call from the doctor explaining that her bloodwork was pointing toward ALL, all I could think of was leukemia?  That’s cancer…my 3-year-old baby.”

After a bone marrow biopsy, Sheikh was diagnosed with risk B cell ALL. She was given a blood and platelet transfusion the next day and prepped for mediport placement surgery.

“This routine surgery landed her in the ICU due to a collapsed lung during extubation,” added Patel. “It was surreal. It was a long and tough race, but we are so lucky she did not experience many side effects and her body responded well to treatment.”

Aliza Sheikh is in the 5th Grade at Haun Elementary. She enjoys knitting, building Lego sets, reading and Harry Potter movies.  When she grows up, she would like to be a biomedical engineer.  One day she would like to travel to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower.

“I’m ready to be a part of the Gala to help find a cure for cancer,” said Aliza Sheikh.  “It will be fun to get all dressed up and be a part of such an amazing cause!”
