Vacancy is the second book in Jann Alexanders West Texas-set womens fiction series, The Dust, and in this novel two women at different points in their lives face tragedy and second chances, finding common ground in their losses. Keep a box of tissues at hand as these characters quickly wedge their way into your heart.

Helen McCabe, the middle-aged, widowed kindergarten teacher, is shocked by her husbands sudden death, suffering the uncertainties and questions it prompts. In her grief, she becomes entangled in the life of one of her small students, a winsome, shy girl named Jillie, and concerns herself well beyond the boundaries shed normally recognize. Charlene Simpson, Jillies mother, has been trapped in an abusive relationship with Jillies deadbeat, drunk of a father, and a new pregnancy is the last thing she needs. Not only is he in no position to welcome another child into her tenuous living situation, but her boyfriend, Ray, who didnt want Jillie or Mick, his young teenage son from an earlier marriage, is going to take out his displeasure on her with his fists. Both women have drifted through their lives up to this point, and their conflict over Helens excessive interest in Jillie motivates both to seek a better way. A terrible accident reveals they have more in common than they ever thought.

Alexanders characters are strong and vividly crafted, and their choices drive the plot. I was immediately drawn into these two womens lives, waiting for the next shoe to drop because of the ominous foreshadowing from the beginning of the book. The descriptions of the struggling, dusty West Texas town of Hartless are cinematic, and the harsh extremes of the High Plains weather add another layer of challenge to everyones daily existence. The towns name itself hints at what the besieged young single mother may find there when the dust settles.

I recommend VACANCY to readers of womens fiction, especially those who want strong female protagonists and character-driven stories.

SPARK! hosted SPARKtacular, a fundraiser at the home of Carrie and Blake Rowling to raise funds to inspire creativity in students. Event co-chairs were Kristi and Ron Hoyl and Melissa Sherrill and Ross Martin. Honorary chairs were Beth and Chuck Thoele.

Local Dallasite singer songwriter Sarah Johnson sang and played guitar in the backyard while guests visited and enjoyed the delicious food from Roots Hospitality: Pimento Cheese Arancini, Crispy Mini Pork Tacos, Watermelon & Feta Salad, Ahi Tuna 'Poke Style', Grilled Shaved Beef Tenderloin Slider, Whipped Goat Cheese & Focaccia Toast and a Grazing Table.

Meg Bittner, SPARK! president and CEO, welcomed everyone and encouraged them to visit SPARK!, which was designed and built by artists to encourage creativity in children. Creative learning is rare, and in Title 1 schools, students might receive one hour of art per month, if theyre lucky. We raise funds for Title 1 school scholarships, so that they can attend a field trip at SPARK! By the end of the year, we will welcome more than 20,000 people to our place. Creativity is not a must have; its vital to our youth.

Fitness Ambassadors is bringing its signature community-driven approach to wellness to Plano this fall with a new community fitness experience taking place Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Legacy West. Legacy West, located at 5908 Headquarters Dr., Plano, TX 75024, will welcome guests for a morning of movement, shopping, wellness and social connection.

Called Rooftop Sweat & Social, the inaugural event, presented by Kinective Fitness, is designed to bring together movement, social connection and lifestyle experiences in one elevated setting, transforming the Legacy West rooftop into a vibrant wellness destination featuring back-to-back fitness classes, curated brand activations, shopping and a dynamic vendor marketplace.

The event is part of Fitness Ambassadors' continued expansion across North Texas as the organization celebrates its 10-year anniversary and evolves into a broader lifestyle and wellness platform centered around movement, community and culture.

"Over the past decade, we've seen firsthand how powerful movement can be in bringing people together," said Mai Lyn Ngo, founder of Fitness Ambassadors. "Rooftop Sweat & Social is designed to create an environment where guests can move their bodies, discover new brands, connect with others and experience wellness in a way that feels approachable, social and fun."

Throughout the morning, guests will move through four signature workouts led by some of North Texas' leading fitness studios, beginning with an all-levels yoga flow from YogaSix, followed by strength training with Sweat440 Prestonwood, Mat Pilates with JETSET Modern Pilates West McKinney and a high-energy boxing workout led by KINECTIVE Fitness.

Following the workouts, attendees are invited to stay for a rooftop social hour featuring a live DJ, recovery opportunities, shopping, product sampling and immersive wellness experiences.

"Legacy West has become one of North Texas' premier destinations for lifestyle, dining and community experiences, making it the perfect backdrop for this event," Ngo said. Bound Beauty is the third novel in author Jennifer Silverwoods Wylder Tales series, dark, seductive stories of magic, cursed power, witches, shapeshifters, ghosts, demons, ancient gods, passion, loyalty, sacrifice, and love in its many forms: a fantastical reimagining of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. In this story, Vynashas tale comes full circle as she returns to Bitterhelm to finish what was always meant to be.

Vynasha, determined to protect her nephew, Wyll, her brother, Ceddrych, and the other young ones shes come to love, has studied the magicks of Soraya and Thea, hoping to gain the knowledge and strength needed to oppose the forces of Bitterhelm. While it goes against the grain, she perseveres with Sorayas teachings and is helplessly drawn by her desire for Balos, whom she knew as Ferox back in Bitterhelm. The stress she is under is palpable throughout the story as the danger mounts, and she is thrust back into Grendels world and forced to confront what is truth and what are lies. I loved how the tables eventually turned, but I felt the enormous cost to Vynashas very nature.

The authors world-building and storytelling are atmospheric and cinematic; the setting is so vivid I felt as if I were in the moment with each narrator. The magic system relies on runes and physical manipulation that feels ancient, with its true power still largely hidden.

The story is dark and tragic and without the ending most often presented in Beauty and the Beast retellings, making those other tales seem insipid by comparison. But if youre down for a story full of strong women, shaped by tragic experiences and powerful emotions, this is definitely the version for you. I recommend reading the series for the most enjoyment and the clearest understanding of the action and motives.

A Frisco resident, Dr. Satyan is the director of skull base surgery at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Plano, and a neurosurgeon with Dallas Neurosurgical & Spine in Plano. He is one of only two Texas neurosurgeons on this list and the only neurosurgeon from the DFW Metroplex.

Dr. Satyan is an accomplished brain and spine surgeon, who has been in practice for more than a decade. His care philosophy centers on listening to the patient and providing highly personalized treatment options. He specializes in degenerative spine disease, traumatic spine injuries, metastatic disease and the resection of primary spinal cord tumors.

Junior Achievement of Dallas and Richardson ISD Open JA Discovery Center at Greenwood Hills

Junior Achievement of Dallas (JA Dallas) and Richardson Independent School District (RISD) opened the JA Discovery Center at Greenwood Hills Learning Center on Thursday, Aug. 27, with a ribbon-cutting followed by a community open house. The experiential learning center is a hands-on financial literacy and career readiness space where students run a simulated city and build a personal budget.

Every RISD fifth grader and every RISD seventh grader will participate in learning experiences at the center. That totals 5,000 students in the first year, and more than 7,500 annually at full capacity.

Attending the evenings celebration were Richardson Mayor Amir Omar, Richardson ISD board of trustee members, JA Dallas board of directors members, community sponsors of the JA Discovery Center and students who attend RISD schools and their families.

The center is built as a small city with familiar Richardson-area landmarks like Main Street and storefronts sponsored by area businesses including CORE Construction, Credit Union of Texas, FedEx, Glenn Partners, Richardson ISD, State Farm and Toyota.

RISD fifth graders will spend weeks in the classroom on business and economics, then come to the center for JA BizTown. They apply for jobs, run the storefronts, open bank accounts, pay taxes, meet payroll and take out and repay business loans.

Seventh graders will come for JA Finance Park beginning in spring 2027, where they build a personal budget, evaluate financial choices and manage real-life scenarios tied to income and expenses.

"At The JA Discovery Center, we aim to help young people see themselves and opportunity differently," said LaTurno. "Its about a fifth grader realizing they could own a business someday, and a seventh grader understanding that the smart financial choices they make today can shape the life they build tomorrow. "The fifth grader who discovers maybe I could own a business someday. The seventh grader who begins to understand that the choices they make today can shape the life they build tomorrow."

The JA Discovery Center also revives a piece of district history. RISD previously ran its own simulated city, Enterprise City, at Canyon Creek Elementary starting in 1985, and generations of RISD graduates still name it as a favorite school memory.

"One of the most difficult moments as a superintendent just a few years ago was making a recommendation to consolidate schools, and this school, Greenwood Hills, was one of them," said Branum. "But we delivered a promise that we were going to continue to invest in it and make it something special for their students and for generations to come. We have taken a space that, if we allowed, could be empty of dreams, and instead it hosts a whole new generation of dreams,"

"The open house ran from 6 to 8 p.m. with guided tours, a DJ, giant games, face painting, the Richardson Library outreach van and food provided by the Credit Union of Texas Community Grill. The first student sessions at the JA Discovery Center begin Sept. 15.

Sword Brethren is the first book in author Jon Byrnes fascinating 13th-century-set crusades series, The Northern Crusader Chronicles, which follows the life of a young, dispossessed English lord, Richard Fitz Simon, from the murder of his father to joining the Livonian Order of Swordbrothers to defend and advance the easternmost boundary of Christendom in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. Fourteen-year-old Richard and his fathers loyal steward, Wilhelm Weber, flee their home in England only steps ahead of assassins sent by his treacherous Uncle Gilbert, who murdered his own brother for his land, money, and title. The two fugitives escape to Lübeck, where Wilhelms brother still operates the family salt business, only to find Everhard is very resentful of Wilhelms past. Penniless, he and Wilhelm depend on Everhards grudging goodwill to subsist until Richards secret relationship with Everhards daughter, Elsebeth, is revealed and changes everything. Fleeing for his life, Richard finds passage on a ship bound for Riga and a life in the service of the Livonian brothers of the sword, whose mission is to safeguard the recently established outposts and assist in converting the local pagan tribespeople to Christianity.

The story is told by 53-year-old Richard Fitz Simon, a prisoner of Prince Alexander Nevsky, captured after the battle on the ice of Lake Peipus. Severely wounded, he must recover before he can be ransomed back to his order, and as his convalescence progresses, he dictates the story of his life to an Irish scribe provided by the prince who is mightily intrigued by his past. Richard complies to pass the time and, hopefully, have the resulting memoir sent to the son he left behind when he fled Lübeck.

Richard is an engaging, relatable character, frustrated by circumstances that never should have been. At 14, he is an earnest young man, desirous of gaining the approval of his emotionally distant and dismissive father and following in the noble path laid out for him from birth. However, Richard has a fiery temper that often overrides his good sense, landing him in serious trouble many times over the course of his life. Yet, no matter what, when danger appears, he invariably chooses the road of honor. His story is filled with obstacles created by encounters with those who have chosen otherwise, whether because of jealousy, greed, pride, or prejudice, and they do their utmost to harm him or worse.

The plot moves swiftly, with a ton of action in a very short timeframe, as only two years pass in the tale of his past, and it concludes when he is 16. The author creates a vivid, vibrant medieval backdrop for Richards tale, whether in London or on the fringes of civilization. The settings are so well drawn that readers will almost feel or see or smell the characters surroundings.

I recommend SWORD BRETHREN to readers of historical fiction, especially those interested in the Baltic region crusades.

An easy-to-understand yet comprehensive discussion of how the job affects first responders and their families.

Burned Out by Iris Waichler, MSW, is a comprehensive presentation on how first responders' jobs affect their physical and mental health, their relationships with family and friends, how to recognize the warning signs of trauma, and what resources and treatment are available to help. While delving deeply into the different forms trauma can take, the discussion is engaging and easy to understand, while still including footnoted citations for further reading for those who want to focus on a particular topic.

Sprinkled throughout are the words of the first responders themselves- the firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs- that give testimony to the validity of the wear and tear and resulting damage their life of service can cause, the impacts of which may be mitigated by the same type of pre-planning and preparation for such if addressed prior to their taking up of their turnout or latex gloves. Clear, comprehensive communication with family members and supportive friends before, during, and after hard shifts appears to be key to handling potential trauma. The book also recognizes and discusses generational differences in the workplace that can lead to tension or to responders not seeking help when they need it. A generational aspect I found particularly interesting was how many first responders' children followed in their parents' footsteps when choosing their own career.

I recommend BURNED OUT to first responders and their family members, especially those just entering their chosen career field.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry students sharpen their skills on dental mission trips

A busy dental student scheduled to graduate next May, few would fault Mackenzie Kenzie Bankes for heading to Jamaica for a few lazy days to enjoy sandy beaches and misty mountains. But those and even dances to the Caribbean islands famous reggae beats, had to wait.

Bankes and fellow Texas A&M University College of Dentistry students traveled Aug. 1-8 on a dental mission trip to St. Elizabeth Parish and its Helping Hand Dental Clinic in the southwestern part of the country. Working with the nonprofit Christian Medical & Dental Association, they provided oral hygiene education, cleanings, fillings and tooth extractions to more than 600 underserved residents rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa last year.

We worked long days in a clinic without air conditioning, but the opportunity to bring relief, healing and hope made every challenge worthwhile, she said.

The 16 dental students and three dental hygiene students werent alone in their humanitarian efforts. Several groups of A&M Dentistry students were globetrotting this summer with both dentistry skills and benevolent hearts.

Mexican mission of compassion

Ten A&M Dentistry students began their summer academic break with a journey May 17-23 to Mexico to provide fillings, crowns, bridges, extractions and other care to residents in areas around Puebla, Mexico. Hosted by Wehrle Implant Immersion Center, they screened applicants in the first few days; accepted patients were shuttled days later to Wehrles 30,000-square-foot dental facility in Puebla for treatment.

The center milled everything needed, and fourth-year dental student Heydi Vanegas delivered her first dental bridge to a patient who appreciated the restored smile.

I gained so much confidence in just a week, Vanegas said. There were other volunteer dentists who provided us with helpful lectures and tips in the clinic, which made the learning experience extremely immersive.

She estimated about 200 patients were treated during the mission trip.

Every day, I was reminded of why I chose this profession and how grateful I am to have the opportunity to use my career to serve others, Vanegas said. (The experiences) reaffirmed my passion for dentistry and my commitment to giving back to communities that need it most.

She hopes to participate in mission trips to Honduras and Guatemala, her parents native countries, in the future.

Dr. Michael Wehrle, Baylor College of Dentistry Class of 1989, said the first mission trip was three years ago with Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Dentistry students. A&M Dentistry students have participated twice.

We always go to the same place, since we built the hotel, lab and dental office just for this purpose, said Wehrle, who has traveled to Mexico on missions since 2002 and on missions in Honduras years earlier.

The treatment center is modern and technologically advanced, but the mission trip had many less-than-luxurious times. A house served as the volunteers main location those first few days and a basketball court substituted as a screening center, which meant the group had limited space and equipment. They also worked long hours and encountered some communication barriers; however, people waited patiently each day, said fourth-year dental student Van Nguyen, who, like Bankes, has participated in several dental mission trips.

The Mexican mission also includes a bootcamp-style curriculum, referred to as Wehrle Implant Immersion Course. The center was built in 2012.

This experience reminded me that being a good dentist is not only about clinical skills, but also about being able to communicate and connect with patients, Nguyen said. I was touched by how friendly and welcoming everyone was, and I left determined to improve my Spanish so I can better serve Spanish-speaking patients in the future.

Many people seeking care had multiple cavities, severe periodontal disease or needed extractions of most or all their teeth. She and fellow fourth-year dental student Karina Estrada assisted with full-mouth extractions in the clinic so patients could receive complete dentures the same day.

Seeing the extent of their dental needs (reinforced) how important access to dental care is and strengthened my commitment to community service, Nguyen said.

The next mission is May 16-22. Twenty A&M Dentistry students may attend.

The instructors and I take a special joy in watching the students grow so much during just one week, Wehrle said.

Providing meaningful care in the Philippines

Fourth-year dental student Omar Ali finished his summer semester July 24, only hours before heading to the Philippines as part of the newly formed Act Asia mission created by A&M Dentistry students, faculty and alumni. The group arrived in rural Buug a day late after flight delays but immediately began seeing patients about 300 people were waiting.

We worked through sunset, providing as much care as we could before finally closing for the day, Ali wrote in an account of the trip. We had understood before the trip that the dental need in Buug was significant; but seeing it firsthand was different. Many of the patients we screened had heavy calculus, extensive decay, and multiple teeth that could no longer be restored.

Because of limited time and equipment challenges, group members limited services to cleanings, fillings, extractions and oral health education.

Most patients needed more than one of them, often involving several teeth, wrote Ali, who traveled to Gitega, Burundi, on a similar mission in 2025. After discussing their most urgent needs, we allowed patients to help decide which treatment would be most meaningful to them that day.

Following a meeting with Mayor Dionesia Lagas and city staff the next day, A&M Dentistry students and faculty arrived at the clinic to find about 300 people waiting outside many gathering before 8 a.m. because news of the dental teams arrival had spread via Facebook.

Our team worked continuously and treated more than 100 patients that day, Ali wrote. Even so, nearly 200 others had to be asked to return the following morning. Treating that many people was an accomplishment, but the patients we could not reach made the scale of the need impossible to ignore.

In a call earlier this year for a global shift to environmentally friendly, less invasive and affordable oral healthcare, the World Health Organization reported tooth decay is the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide, affecting an estimated 2.7 billion people.

The demand for basic dental care globally isnt surprising to Dr. Jonathan Clemetson, clinical faculty in comprehensive dentistry at A&M Dentistry, a veteran of many mission trips in more than a decade.

He mentored the students during the Philippines mission trip and did the same during a trip to his native Jamaica in March. Planning for the Philippines mission trip began in the first quarter of the year, and students held fundraisers and solicited donations for their travel expenses.

Sadly, we can only take a small number of students due to costs, long travel and (the) logistics of just moving people around on the ground, Clemetson said.

He and A&M Dentistry students will return to the Philippines next summer and continue to receive numerous messages from Buug-area residents who werent treated but remain grateful for the groups efforts.

Bankes, whose first mission trip to Jamaica was last summer, said the mission trip experience is invaluable for all students.

Working in a setting with limited resources reminded me that dentistry is not always about having every tool or treatment option available, Bankes said. It is about using the knowledge and skills you have to provide the best, most appropriate care for each patient.

Great start to this new K-9 mystery series!

Dogged Pursuit is the first novel in author Tracy Carters new Veronica Kildare K-9 Mystery series, and it is a wonderfully detailed mystery and a dog-filled and entertaining debut. A strong female protagonist and her much-loved, highly talented tracking dog lead readers through the mountainous terrain of the Colorado countryside on search-and-rescue missions, including one for a renowned scientist slated to testify in an upcoming, high-profile murder case.

I really enjoyed the characters introduced in the novel and look forward to seeing them again in future adventures, especially the main characters Veronica Kildare, her father, Bob, and their newly welcomed employee and friend, Michael Fletcher. Veronica has a tragic past, and her recent move to just outside Boulder, Colorado, is a life-saving second chance. Her backstory slowly unfolds over the course of the novel, starting with broad hints that kept me coming back to hear the rest of her story. Her decision to extend her new life to the orphan, Michael, and the scared little dog, Coco, was heartwarming and inspiring.

Of course, the story features a lot of dogs, and the relationship between Veronica and her rescue dog, Leda, is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the details of Ledas tracking and drug-detection sweeps, as well as the information about dog training and Veronicas fledgling business, Dogged Pursuit. I even liked hearing about Bobs articles and product testing!

The plot is intriguing and has several unique features, such as identifying the unusual helicopter seen flying over Rocky Mountain National Park early in the story. Missing witnesses have been the subject of many mysteries, but the author delivered fresh twists that made the story feel above and beyond the ordinary. I was engrossed watching it all unfold.

I experienced Dogged Pursuit as an audiobook narrated by new-to-me narrator Alyssa Baumann, and I was never disappointed. I thought she did a beautiful job, altering her voice to portray the different characters rather than doing a straight read-aloud of the material. The voices were consistent and recognizable for each character, and I especially thought her rendering of the male characters was convincing.

I recommend DOGGED PURSUIT to mystery series readers who enjoy dog-centric or dog-themed stories.

While the author set the bar high with the series' excellent debut, she definitely met and surpassed it in this exciting follow-up.

Lawyers, Dogs, and Money is the second book in author Tracy Carter's marvelous working dog-centric series, the Veronica Kildare K-9 Mysteries, and continues the suspense-filled story of the title character and her canine partner, Leda, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever rescue. Carter set the bar high with the series' excellent debut, Dogged Pursuit, but she definitely met and surpassed it in this exciting follow-up.

The story unfolds from Veronica's point of view, and she is a calm and steady protagonist, although still healing from the past trauma of losing her fiancé, Zach, at the hands of a serial killer. Formerly a legal assistant in an Ohio district attorney's office, she relocated to Colorado to start over as a working dog trainer and handler far from the now-incarcerated murderer. She and Leda have gained renown as a successful team in search and rescue and drug detection in the Boulder area. Her narrative is told with a strong, confident voice, and she comes across as genuine, engaging, and relatable as she deals with her lingering grief and learns to let go of her lost love. She's always on the go, with numerous irons in the fire; however, she reacts authentically rather than super-humanly, knowing she needs regular rest and respite.

In addition to Veronica, several well-developed and engaging secondary characters are integral to her personal life and business operations, most notably her father, Bob Kildare, and her assistant trainer, Michael Fletcher, a young man she rescued from the streets of Denver in the previous book. I enjoy Michael's contribution to the story immensely and am delighted with his continued success in his studies and growth as a trainer and handler. However, I was completely charmed by Bob, with his unwavering support of his daughter, his skills in the kitchen, product demonstrations and reviews, and dogged investigatory computer research. Bob has been a widower long enough, and there is a hint of a romance in his future.

The book's opening sequence is attention-grabbing and exceptionally well done, absolutely setting the pace for what's yet to come. A central mystery unfolds, with a wide array of possible suspects and motives to investigate and rule out. Just when I felt I knew where the threat was coming from, new details emerged and sent the characters in an alternate direction. I thought that the author accurately depicted reality when the parties to the investigation were pulled away to work on other things and couldn't devote their 24/7 to the one case, as often happens in many mystery stories. The dog-training scenes were fascinating, informative, and entertaining, as were the interesting tidbits the characters shared about Kadri's birth country and the import/export business. The author uses the Colorado setting to advantage, painting vivid and enticing pictures throughout. I did have a very minor issue with Veronica's tendency to over-explain at times, using definitions that sounded like they came straight out of a dictionary; however, these were few and far between.

Even though this is the second book in the series, new readers shouldn't have any trouble catching up and enjoying the story. With its engaging characters, exciting plot, and non-stop action, I recommend LAWYERS, DOGS, AND MONEY to mystery readers, especially those who enjoy stories featuring working dogs, search and rescue, drug detection, or books set in Colorado.
