'Food for Fines' Program Comes to the Mesquite Public Library System Feb. 17-22

As part of the Mesquite Public Library System’s 50th Anniversary this February, the Library will offer a “Food for Fines” program during the week of February 17-22.  Fines will be forgiven for nonperishable food items donated at either library facility to benefit Mesquite Social Services and Sharing Life Community Outreach.

Each food item knocks off $1 from the overdue fine tally.  For example, to pay a $3.80 fine, donate 4 food items (sorry, no change back on cans.)

Rice, beans, tuna, jars of peanut butter, boxes of macaroni and cheese — as long as it is food and nonperishable, it works to pay late fees.  High protein items are always in need, as well as healthy snacks for kids like crackers, juice boxes and pudding cups.  (Please no glass containers, or opened/damaged or expired goods.)

It’s a win-win situation.  Library users can have their fines waived while assisting local agencies in the fight against hunger.  Donated food items will only pay for late fees.  Charges for lost or damaged items, processing fees and fees for replacement library cards still need to be paid for with cash or checks.
