Texans Can Academy - Garland Students and Staff Participate in Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Texans Can Academy - Garland students were proud to echo the sentiments of one of the most pivotal advocates for African American rights at the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. Students and staff gathered to walk in the parade while providing information about the dropout recovery and prevention high school.

Hosted by the NAACP-Garland, the annual parade and celebration was held on Saturday, January 18 at 10 a.m. Parade participants included Garland businesses and nonprofits. A special MLK Commemorative Program following the parade honored the lifetime achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We are very proud of the students that participated in this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade,” said Texans Can Academy - Garland Principal Daniel Johnson. “Opportunities like the parade offer our students a chance to make a difference in not only their own lives, but in the lives of those around them. Our staff is eager to continue teaching them skills they can use both in and out of the classroom as well as providing value-added resources.”

Texans Can Academies serves students who have struggled in a traditional high school environment and offers students the chance to achieve a high school diploma instead of a GED. The nonprofit strives to be a value-added organization, providing services for students both in and out of the classroom such as volunteering opportunities, college and career opportunities, eye exams and glasses, transportation, immunizations and more.
