Texans Can Academy - Fort Worth Westcreek campus offers students a 13-week Eye Tech Academy program where students can learn skills that will take them into the field of opticianry and help them enter jobs in the optical field in order to achieve economic independence. There is an “Eye CAN Optical” clinic at the campus where students can help Dr. Gayle Daniels give eye exams and fit students or community members for glasses. 

Students at Texans Can Academy - Dallas Pleasant Grove had their vision tested at Eye CAN Optical clinic, and on September 27th, seven students enrolled in the Eye Tech Academy travelled with Dr. Gayle Daniels to Texans Can Academy - Dallas Pleasant Grove to distribute prescription glasses to students. Approximately 40 students received their new glasses that didn’t previously have them.

According to Education Week Research Center analysis of National Survey of Children’s Health Data, 2018, nearly 1 in 3 children haven’t had their vision tested in at least two years. Reading, writing, smart board work and using computers are among the visual tasks high school students perform daily. A student’s eyes are constantly in use in the classroom to capture the information needed to learn and follow directions. When one’s vision is not functioning properly, education and participation in sports can suffer. Texans Can Academy ensures students in need of vision exams and prescription glasses are able to receive the care they need to improve their academic performance. 

Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 14 dropout recovery schools located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. To date, more than 162,139 youth have been given a second chance at life with the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
