The Real ‘McFarland USA’ Track Stars will Share Their Story
at Dallas Christian School
Dallas Christian School will be welcoming Johnny Samaniego and Thomas Valles, two former students from McFarland High School’s championship cross country team that the 2015 Disney movie was based on. On October 19th, the real ‘McFarland’ track stars will share their story with the Dallas Christian Middle and High School students. They often speak to school children about the value of education and perseverance. They relay their own journey from migrant workers to star high school cross country athletes, which became the inspiration for the movie. They will also travel with our cross country team to their TAPPS Cross Country meet on October 18th and will be able to meet and encourage runners from other area schools.
The movie McFarland was released in 2015 by Walt Disney Pictures and Mayhem Pictures. Based on the true story of a 1987 cross country team from a mainly Latino high school in McFarland, California, the film stars Kevin Costner as Jim White as the school's coach. The cross country team with seven members, who have little hope for their future, become a close-knit, mutually supportive unit. Under White's guidance, the school's cross country team becomes outstandingly successful, winning nine state titles over the years. With respect to that first team, all its members escaped from the cycle of poverty in their lives, being first in their families to go to college or into military careers.
Dallas Christian is excited to host these inspiring men and will be welcoming other local schools to bring students to hear their story as well.
